Oceana calls for policy changes on World Oceans Day
On World Oceans Day, the environmental organization Oceana has issued a formal call for governments to prioritize marine restoration. The UN theme for this year is 'Reimagine,' which emphasizes the need for a fundamental shift in human behavior toward marine resources. Vera Coelho, Executive Director and Vice President of Oceana in Europe, stated that immediate action is required to halt ecosystem destruction. The organization advocates for stopping the overexploitation of fish stocks and reducing pollution to allow natural recovery. Oceana argues that healthy oceans are essential for providing food, supporting global employment, generating clean energy, and mitigating climate change impacts. The group insists that existing science-based solutions and legislation must be enforced effectively. Five specific, yet currently unspecified, priority actions have been highlighted by the organization for implementation by government authorities.
