United Nations reports executions of protesters in Iran
On June 15, 2026, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, reported that Iranian authorities have executed at least 40 people since the beginning of the year. Among the deceased, 18 were identified as protesters involved in anti-government demonstrations. Speaking before the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Turk stated that the Iranian government has intensified its violent crackdown on public dissent. This crackdown includes the mass arrest of thousands of citizens and the imposition of stricter social restrictions. The Commissioner expressed solidarity with the Iranian people, noting they are caught between regional conflicts and harsh internal repression. According to data provided by non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International, Iran ranks second globally in the number of executions performed, trailing only China.
