Parliamentary committee chair appointments spark political controversy
The allocation of parliamentary committee chair positions has triggered a significant political confrontation in Cyprus. Discussions on the 'Protoselido' program highlighted deep disagreements regarding the exclusion of the ALMA movement from leadership roles and the involvement of ELAM. Michalis Paraskevas of ALMA argued that the selection process violated the spirit of Article 73 of the Constitution and ignored the principle of proportionality. He further criticized the Selection Committee for failing to hold separate votes for each candidate. During the debate, AKEL MP Christos Christofidis criticized the legitimacy of ELAM, citing the electoral success of the Nazi party in Germany as a historical warning against equating electoral victory with moral or political validation. In response, ELAM MP Linos Papagiannis condemned the comparison and reaffirmed his party's stance against all totalitarian regimes. Furthermore, ALMA accused AKEL of hypocrisy, claiming the party voted for candidates only to later issue statements opposing them. This marks a rare instance where parliamentary committee appointments failed to reach a unanimous consensus.
