AKEL leader comments on book presentation and Cyprus issue
On Monday, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou attended the book presentation of former party leader Andros Kyprianou in Nicosia, titled 'Through the Symplegades of the Cyprus Issue: A Personal Testimony'. Stefanou commended the publication, noting that Kyprianou's active involvement in past negotiations adds significant value to the historical account of the Cyprus problem. During his speech, Stefanou described the absence of a solution as a continuous source of danger that leaves future generations exposed to insecurity. He stated that the current status quo, which he attributed to the 1974 coup and the subsequent Turkish invasion, is not static but deteriorating over time. The Secretary General further argued that the lack of a settlement hinders the country's development in critical sectors, specifically mentioning energy and water management. He emphasized that the book provides important insights that should be integrated into the national public dialogue. The event served as a platform for reasserting the party's stance on the urgent need to resolve the long-standing conflict.
