Mahmoud Abbas announces upcoming Palestinian elections
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has announced plans for presidential and parliamentary elections. According to the presidential office, presidential elections are scheduled for early 2027. Regarding legislative elections, reports differ: one statement indicated they would occur in November, while another official source mentioned the end of 2027. Abbas, who has been in power since 2005 following the death of Yasser Arafat, has not clarified if he intends to seek reelection. The announcement follows long-standing criticism regarding his rule by decree and the lack of elections since 2006. The upcoming process includes elections for the Palestinian National Council, which serves as the parliament of the Palestine Liberation Organization. The last legislative elections in the Palestinian territories were held in 2006, resulting in a victory for Hamas over the Fatah movement. The president has signed a decree to amend existing electoral procedures to facilitate these processes.
