Challenges facing the village of Stavrokonnou in Paphos district

The village of Stavrokonnou in the Paphos district is currently facing significant challenges regarding its future sustainability. With a population of only 50 to 55 residents, the community struggles with a lack of basic services, limited financial resources, and an aging demographic. Community leader Eleni Kamarligkou, who has held her position for a decade, cites the lack of funding as the primary obstacle to improving local infrastructure. Following the 1974 Turkish invasion and subsequent population exchange, the village was resettled by Greek Cypriot refugees, including Kamarligkou herself. Currently, there are only three families residing in the village, while local amenities like the community cafe have closed. The village features historical landmarks such as the Timios Stavros church and a former Muslim mosque. New family settlement remains difficult due to the absence of modern facilities and public services. Despite these conditions, residents continue to maintain the community's identity and history.
