Dick Advocaat becomes the oldest coach at the World Cup
At 78 years old, Dutch manager Dick Advocaat has set a record as the oldest coach to lead a team in a FIFA World Cup. Currently managing Curacao, Advocaat made his return to professional football after a hiatus during which he stepped away to care for his seriously ill daughter. During the national anthem ceremony at the World Cup, Advocaat was visibly emotional. Curacao, a nation with a population estimated between 160,000 and 185,440 people, marked its historic first appearance in the tournament. Despite the significant achievement of participating and scoring their first goal, the team suffered a 7-1 defeat against Germany. This marks Advocaat’s third World Cup appearance with three different national teams, his first being in 1994.
