Cypriot neurologist receives funding for cerebral amyloid angiopathy research
Dr. Andreas Charidimou, a Cypriot neurologist based at Boston University, has been awarded a research grant alongside Dr. Marcel Verbeek from Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen. The project, titled 'Translational Framework for Innovation in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy' (TRAFFIC), received 9 million dollars in funding from the Leducq Foundation. This grant is part of the foundation's International Networks of Excellence Program and will span five years. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a condition characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-beta protein in brain blood vessel walls. It is a major contributor to cognitive decline, dementia, and hemorrhagic strokes. Despite its prevalence in Alzheimer's patients and stroke victims, current diagnostic methods and treatment options remain limited. The study aims to investigate the fundamental biological mechanisms of the disease to improve diagnostic precision and develop new therapeutic approaches.
