Cypriot MEPs to abstain from European Parliament vote on Turkey progress report
Cypriot MEPs Loukas Fourlas and Giorgos Georgiou announced they will abstain from the European Parliament's plenary vote on Wednesday regarding the annual Turkey progress report. Although the report outlines Turkey's obligations concerning missing persons in Cyprus, the two-state solution, and violations in the buffer zone, both MEPs cited specific disagreements for their decision. Loukas Fourlas, representing the EPP, noted the report is an improvement over previous versions but stated that describing Turkey as a strategic partner of the EU remains unacceptable. Giorgos Georgiou from Akel pointed to the report's documentation of human rights violations, rule of law issues, and Turkey's regional actions in Syria and the Eastern Mediterranean. Georgiou also expressed concern over the text characterizing Turkey as a 'covert dictatorship' while simultaneously acknowledging its geopolitical relevance. The European People's Party is expected to support the document despite the objections raised by the Cypriot representatives. This vote follows extensive debate regarding Turkey's ongoing role in NATO and its evolving relationship with the European Union.
