Cyprus Police clarify legal procedures for traffic fine enforcement
The Cyprus Police have issued a formal statement confirming that the delivery of traffic fines, whether detected by officers or traffic camera systems, is conducted in full compliance with current legislation. Officers are authorized to serve these notices at any location within the territories controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. The process is legally supported by the Law on the Extrajudicial Settlement of Offences, the Road Traffic Offences Law, and the Criminal Procedure Law. Significant changes to the enforcement timeline have been implemented. Criminal proceedings for unpaid fines may now commence 105 days after the date of service, replacing the previous 45-day window which was based on the issue date. Furthermore, the 50% surcharge for unpaid fines is now applied 90 days after the issue date, extended from the previous 30-day period. Authorities emphasized that the date of service is now the primary factor for calculating the countdown toward potential prosecution.
