Update on traffic ticket issuance and payment procedures in Cyprus
The Cyprus Police have clarified that the issuance of traffic tickets for violations detected by officers or speed cameras is conducted legally under Law 47(I)/1997 and Law 55(I)/2001. Officers are legally authorized to serve these notices anywhere within the Republic-controlled areas, in accordance with Chapter 155 of the Criminal Procedure Law. The timeline for initiating criminal proceedings against unpaid tickets has been extended to 105 days from the date of service, replacing the previous 45-day window from the date of issuance. Calculations for these deadlines are now strictly based on the date of service rather than the date of issuance. Additionally, the deadline to pay a fine before a 50% surcharge is applied has been extended to 90 days, compared to the previous 30-day requirement. These measures aim to standardize the enforcement and collection process for traffic offenses across the jurisdiction.
