New Cyprus road safety campaign addresses distracted driving

The Cyprus Police and insurance company Anytime launched a new road safety campaign in Nicosia titled 'How Many Scrolls is a Life Worth? None. Hold the Wheel'. The initiative aims to combat distracted driving, which is cited by Traffic Police Director Charis Evripidou as a primary cause of road collisions. Statistics released at the launch event show that in 2025, 45 people died on Cyprus roads, with 11 of those deaths linked to distracted or careless driving. Specifically, the fatalities included nine pedestrians, eight people aged 25 or under, and three cyclists. Police records indicate 31,066 reports for mobile phone use behind the wheel were issued between 2023 and 2025. Furthermore, authorities reported that distracted driving has been linked to more than five fatal accidents in 2026. The campaign will feature media outreach, social media content, and educational sessions at universities, army camps, and major public events.
