Tufan Erhurman discusses methodology for Cyprus negotiations
Tufan Erhurman, leader of the Turkish Cypriot side, held an hour-long meeting with the Council of Political Parties in the north to discuss recent developments regarding the Cyprus issue and the Immovable Property Commission. The meeting was attended by party leaders including Unal Ustel, Sila Usar Incirli, Fikri Ataoglu, Erhan Arikli, Zeki Celer, and Kudret Ozersay. Erhurman emphasized that negotiations must be result-oriented rather than continuing merely for the sake of the process. He highlighted a 'step-by-step' approach involving confidence-building measures, a defined negotiation period, and an agreed four-point methodology. Erhurman specifically identified six areas of shared jurisdiction—energy, maritime zones, hydrocarbons, maritime trade routes, security, and European citizenship—stating that these require co-management. He noted that he would not participate in a formal 5+1 meeting without sufficient prior preparation on the content. Furthermore, he expressed support for the UN Secretary-General’s initiative led by Maria Angela Holguin, provided it aligns with his stated principles and good faith.
