Cyprus achieves 100% excellent rating in 2025 EU bathing water report

The European Commission released its annual bathing water report on June 16, 2026, covering the 2025 bathing season. Cyprus recorded a perfect score, with all 123 monitored bathing sites in the Republic’s free districts achieving an 'excellent' water quality classification. This achievement marks Cyprus as one of the top-performing EU nations, alongside Austria, Bulgaria, and Greece, all of which saw over 95% of sites rated as excellent. Across the EU, Albania, and Switzerland, data from over 22,200 bathing areas were analyzed, revealing that 85% of sites are rated excellent and 96% meet minimum quality standards. Only 1.5% of monitored locations were classified as having poor quality. In Cyprus, authorities collected and analyzed 1,198 water samples to ensure safety. The report noted that coastal waters, with an 88% excellent rating, continue to outperform inland waters like rivers and lakes, which saw a 78% excellent rating. These findings reflect a stable trend in overall European water quality compared to 2024.
