Political leaders in the Turkish Cypriot community discuss the Cyprus issue
Following a meeting of the council of political parties with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, representatives expressed divergent views on potential new developments in the Cyprus process. Unal Ustel, the leader of the UBP and the 'prime minister,' stated that no formal proposals have been tabled. He reiterated his commitment to a two-state solution, sovereign equality, and equal international status for both sides. Ustel questioned the sincerity of President Christodoulides, citing recent electoral trends in the Republic of Cyprus and alleging that the Greek Cypriot side is attempting to undermine the Turkish Cypriot economy. Conversely, the CTP, represented by Sila Usar Incirli, expressed a more positive outlook regarding renewed United Nations activity. The CTP emphasized that long-term negotiations should be avoided and advocated for the four-point methodology proposed by Tufan Erhurman. The parties remain divided on whether a productive path toward a settlement currently exists.
