EU implements new regulations for tire-wear microplastic emissions
The European Environment Agency reports that tire wear generates between 360,000 and 540,000 tons of microplastics in Europe annually, with passenger cars identified as the primary source. The European Chemicals Agency estimates that 176,000 tons of these particles enter European surface waters each year. These particles contain rubber and chemical additives, causing concerns regarding their impact on soil and aquatic ecosystems. In response, the European Parliament and the Council adopted Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, known as Euro 7, to mitigate this environmental pollution. Starting in 2028, new standards for tire wear will apply to C1 category tires for passenger cars placed on the market. From 2030, these requirements will extend to new vehicles and light commercial vehicles in the C2 category. The European Union aims to reduce total microplastic emissions by 30% by 2030. The regulations are scheduled to expand further by 2032 to cover additional vehicle categories.
