Public sector employment data for Cyprus in Q1 2026
According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), employment in the wider public sector reached 78,388 persons in the first quarter of 2026. This represents a 1.8% year-on-year increase, or 1,354 additional jobs. The general government sector accounts for 73,236 employees, while government-controlled companies employ 5,152 individuals. Within the general government, 55,354 are civil servants, 11,476 work in non-profit organizations, and 6,406 are employed by local authorities. The growth in local authorities was significant, rising 14.8% due to staffing increases in district organizations. Additionally, reports noted 7,936 registered unemployed and 13,905 job vacancies at the end of March 2026. Finally, the employment rate for recent graduates aged 20-34 in Cyprus stands at 82.3%, slightly below the EU average of 83%.
