Current developments in EU-Turkey relations and the Cyprus issue

Turkey has recently intensified demands for the modernization of its customs union with the EU, access to the SAFE program, and visa-free travel for its citizens. These requests come despite existing criticisms regarding Turkey's occupation of Northern Cyprus, democratic deficits, and its refusal to impose sanctions on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. Tufan Erhurman, a Turkish Cypriot leader, has requested increased EU assistance for the Turkish Cypriot community. However, he maintains that the EU should not participate directly in the formal negotiations regarding the Cyprus problem. Conversely, the Greek Cypriot leadership and President Nikos Christodoulides emphasize sticking to the UN-backed framework for a resolution. Political discourse remains polarized, with debates centered on whether Turkey and its local representatives in Northern Cyprus are genuinely committed to a solution. Tensions persist over the role of foreign guarantees and the continued presence of Turkish military forces on the island.
