Nicosia launches major redevelopment project for Pedieos River linear park

Authorities in Cyprus have announced a redevelopment plan for the 11.8-kilometer linear park along the Pedieos River, spanning the municipalities of Nicosia, Strovolos, and Lakatamia. The budget for the project has increased to over 30 million euros, with 85 percent of the funding provided by European Union funds through the THALIA 2021-2027 program and the remaining 15 percent covered by the three municipalities. The initiative focuses on ecological restoration across 190,000 square meters, including the creation of wildflower gardens, music and therapeutic gardens, and an artificial lake to boost biodiversity. Infrastructure improvements feature five sports courts for various disciplines, four outdoor gyms, and eight habitats for pollinators known as insect hotels. The project will be executed in two phases; the first phase is expected to take approximately 43 months and covers key areas like the Municipal Garden and Prodromos Park. The second phase is scheduled for the 2028–2034 funding period and will extend to the Presidential Palace area and Athalassas Avenue. Local officials, including Lakatamia Mayor Fotoula Hadjipapa, emphasize that the project aims to create a sustainable green corridor for the capital. Public consultations have already been held to incorporate feedback from local residents and organized groups.
