Nicosia Tourism Board installs new historical street signs in the capital
The Nicosia Tourism Board (NTB) has launched an initiative to redesign and install street signs in the historic centre of Nicosia. So far, 56 signs have been installed, with the project aiming to reach a total of 150 signs. These signs, which feature a design inspired by the city's Venetian walls, include brief historical texts explaining the origin and significance of each name. The project focuses on areas near the new Town Hall and was recently showcased with a tour starting at Lellos Demetriades Square, named after the mayor who served from 1971 to 2001, excluding a brief interruption in 1974. Sotiris Christoforou, an administrative officer at the NTB, stated that the signs are intended to improve the storytelling aspect of guided tours. Authorities are also exploring the possibility of creating themed walking routes based on these locations in the future. The selection of streets was determined by completed regeneration projects and geographical proximity to establish a unified local identity.
