Arrest made in murder of 22-year-old student in Larnaca

Cypriot authorities have arrested a 22-year-old man from Bangladesh in connection with the murder of his compatriot, 22-year-old student Shahruar Ahmed Emon. The victim had been reported missing since June 12, 2026, after leaving his residence in Oroklini for a new job. During the investigation into the disappearance, police received reports of a kidnapping and ransom demands sent to the victim's father. On June 21, the suspect confessed to the murder and directed officers to a location in the Kofinou area of the Larnaca district, where the body was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition. Forensic examinations indicated the victim sustained injuries from a sharp object, and a knife recovered at the scene is suspected to be the murder weapon. Police confirmed the suspect had orchestrated a fake kidnapping to extort money from the victim's family after the killing occurred. The suspect, who was described by officials as being in the country illegally, is scheduled to appear before the Larnaca District Court. At this stage, authorities have found no evidence of organized crime involvement or other accomplices.
