Larnaca police investigate premeditated murder of a 22-year-old student

Police in Larnaca are investigating the premeditated murder of 22-year-old Shahruar Ahmed Emon, a student from Bangladesh who had been missing since June 12, 2026. A 22-year-old compatriot of the victim was arrested after allegedly confessing to the crime and leading authorities to the body, which was found in an advanced state of decomposition near the Kofinou migrant reception center. The perpetrator reportedly used a knife to inflict wounds to the victim's neck and back and also strangled him. The suspect claimed the motive was financial and that he had attempted to extort ransom from the victim's family by using the deceased's mobile phone to send messages. Evidence retrieved at the scene includes a knife identified as the murder weapon and several personal items belonging to the victim. According to investigators, the suspect acted alone and had known the victim for five days prior to the incident. The suspect is expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court to face detention orders.
