China's National University of Defense Technology unveils insect-sized drone prototype

The National University of Defense Technology in China has unveiled a laboratory-stage micro-drone designed to resemble a fly. The device weighs less than 0.3 grams, measures approximately 2 centimeters, and features four hair-thin legs. Unlike conventional drones, it utilizes flapping wings that beat up to 500 times per second, allowing for near-silent operation. The system is controlled via Bluetooth using a mobile device and is designed to carry miniaturized sensors, including a micro-camera and microphone for surveillance and signal collection. Current prototypes face significant technical limitations, including high fragility, vulnerability to wind, and a short flight autonomy of only 1 to 3 minutes due to battery constraints. Despite these challenges, researchers suggest the technology is intended for reconnaissance missions in areas inaccessible to larger aircraft.
