Cyprus tourism sector reports May arrivals decline and June hotel recovery
According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, tourist arrivals in May 2026 reached 455,680, marking a 4.9% decline compared to May 2025. For the January-May 2026 period, total arrivals were 1,166,050, a 13.3% decrease from the previous year. The United Kingdom remained the primary source of tourism in May, accounting for 36.3% of arrivals, followed by Israel at 11.8%. Hotel industry officials, including PASYXE President Thanos Michaelidis, noted that June hotel activity has improved compared to the spring months, though it remains below typical seasonal levels. Occupancy rates vary by region, with Paphos reaching 70% and Famagusta averaging 60%, both lower than the 90% norm. Limassol maintains better rates due to business tourism and limited bed capacity. Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis described 2026 as a difficult year for the sector, noting that the industry is gradually stabilizing after March geopolitical tensions. The government continues efforts to maintain air connectivity and restore tourist interest.
