Patients' Federation calls for review of GeSY restrictions
Following the seventh anniversary of the General Healthcare System (GeSY) in Cyprus, the Federation of Patients' Associations of Cyprus (OSAK) has called for a review of current restrictions imposed by the Health Insurance Organization (HIO). OSAK president Charalambos Papadopoulos argued that while initial restrictions on referrals and prescriptions were justified to prevent abuse, they now cause systemic dysfunction. A survey of 1,337 citizens revealed that 35% have changed their personal physician due to communication difficulties. Patients report that doctors frequently refuse or delay referrals to specialists once monthly quota limits are reached. This practice forces unnecessary appointments and burdens both waitlists and the health fund. Furthermore, the federation notes that current quality criteria for physician compensation are inadequate and should be revised to benefit patients. OSAK suggests improving communication channels to enhance access and reduce pressure on emergency departments. The organization emphasized that it will continue to advocate for structural reforms to protect the system's core philosophy.
