Amazon Web Services announces new local zone in Athens

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the upcoming launch of a new Local Zone in Athens, scheduled to be generally available in July. The infrastructure will provide cloud computing, storage, networking, analytics, and artificial intelligence services directly within Greece. This facility aims to reduce latency for real-time applications such as gaming and data processing, while enabling businesses to meet local data residency requirements. The launch was discussed during a meeting at the Maximos Mansion between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and AWS Senior Vice President Panos Panay. Beyond the Local Zone, the discussions included potential future investments in satellite internet, green energy, and specialized technological research centers. Panay also mentioned plans to integrate the Greek language into the Kindle and Alexa platforms in the future. Selected customers are already utilizing the infrastructure ahead of the official July opening.
