Launch of a nationwide awareness campaign for chronic kidney disease in Cyprus
Alektor Pharmaceutical and AstraZeneca have launched a nationwide awareness campaign in Cyprus focused on Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), titled “Some things exist, but are invisible.” The initiative is supported by the Cyprus Society of Nephrology, the Cyprus Society of Internal Medicine, the Cyprus Diabetes Society, and the Cyprus Cardiology Society. Experts, including Dr. Andreas Kourouklaris, Dr. Andreas Stylianou, Dr. Polykarpos Evripidou, and Dr. Kyriakos Yiangou, presented the importance of early diagnosis for a condition that often progresses without symptoms. Data indicates that over 93 million people in Europe suffer from CKD, affecting approximately one in eight adults. In Cyprus, it is estimated that more than 80,000 individuals are living with some form of the disease. Health officials noted that a significant portion of these cases remain undiagnosed, with 30-40% of affected individuals unaware of their impaired kidney function. The campaign aims to improve detection rates and educate the public on the risks of the disease.
