Cyprus concludes its EU Council presidency with positive assessment from European leaders
During the European Council meeting in Brussels, President Nikos Christodoulides presented the outcomes of the six-month Cypriot presidency of the EU Council. EU institutions and leaders praised the presidency for progress on key policy areas, including defense, security, migration, and the new Multiannual Financial Framework. A negotiating framework for the budget was delivered, with Christodoulides expressing hope for a full political agreement by the end of 2026. The presidency also oversaw the opening of initial accession clusters for Ukraine and Moldova. During a meeting with European Council President António Costa, both leaders affirmed that future progress in EU-Turkey relations is contingent upon constructive developments regarding the Cyprus problem. Costa conveyed this stance to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, emphasizing the EU's desire for an active role in the upcoming UN initiative. Additionally, Christodoulides noted that Cyprus is preparing for accession to the Schengen zone and expects the appointment of a new EU envoy for the Cyprus issue following discussions with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
