Cyprus concludes its six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union
On June 19, 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides officially marked the conclusion of Cyprus' six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union. During the final summit in Brussels, discussions focused on the EU's multiannual financial framework for 2028–2034, with Cyprus presenting a negotiating framework that includes specific figures. While acknowledging discord among member states, Christodoulides framed the lack of universal satisfaction as evidence of a balanced compromise. Key achievements cited include political agreements on national and regional partnership plans, the European Competitiveness Fund, and the Global Europe mechanism. Additionally, 19 EU leaders, including Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, signed a letter demanding action on migration and the creation of return centers in third countries. President Christodoulides also announced that the European Commission will soon appoint an envoy for the Cyprus issue and expressed expectations for the country's imminent accession to the Schengen zone.
