President Christodoulides meets with European Council President Antonio Costa in Brussels
On June 18, 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides met with European Council President Antonio Costa in Brussels to discuss the Cyprus problem and EU-Turkey relations. Christodoulides emphasized that the EU should play a decisive role in the UN Secretary-General’s efforts to restart negotiations for a sustainable and functional solution to the Cyprus issue. During the meeting, both sides affirmed that progress in EU-Turkey relations is contingent upon developments in the Cyprus conflict. Reports indicate that UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin is expected to visit Brussels in early July to meet with Costa, followed by further discussions in Nicosia. President Christodoulides is in Brussels for the final European Council meeting of the Cypriot presidency, where he will present a review of the presidency's work. The agenda for the summit also includes discussions on Ukraine, migration, the multiannual financial framework, and the Middle East. Meanwhile, there are reports of potential plans for a new UN-led 'five-plus-one' conference on Cyprus to be held between late July and early August.
