Limassol Municipal Council to decide on the future of the municipal zoo

The Limassol Municipal Council is meeting today to reach a final decision regarding the future of the Limassol Zoo. Discussions have centered on a proposal by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (KYKPEE) to transform the site into a 'Nature' Biodiversity and Urban Environment Centre. Several proposals have been debated, ranging from total closure to partial upgrades that would retain selected animals. The current updated proposal from KYKPEE advocates for the complete removal of all animals while maintaining a focus on biodiversity education. Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis and Deputy Mayor Dimos Katsis have publicly supported closing the facility, citing modern standards for animal welfare. Conversely, some stakeholders and former officials, including Andreas Christou and Nicos Nicolaides, have argued for retaining the zoo or pursuing a milder transformation that keeps certain species.
