European Parliament president assesses Cyprus' EU council presidency and reunification efforts

During a press conference at the European Council in Brussels, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola evaluated the six-month term of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Metsola commended the Cypriot government for its work during a period of uncertainty and highlighted the successful collaboration on the EU migration return regulation and new passenger rights. She noted that the European Parliament is prepared to negotiate the next Multiannual Financial Framework, expressing optimism for an agreement by year-end. Regarding the Cyprus issue, Metsola emphasized that the problem is a European concern and reiterated support for a solution based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation in accordance with UN resolutions. She stressed that the EU will only be truly united once Cyprus is reunified, calling for the rapid resumption of UN-led diplomatic talks. Additionally, she addressed concerns regarding populism and misinformation, noting the Parliament's commitment to strengthening democratic resilience.
