European Parliament President comments on Cyprus's EU Council presidency and reunification
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has concluded that Cyprus successfully managed its six-month presidency of the Council of the EU despite a period of global uncertainty. In an interview with the Cyprus News Agency, Metsola praised the Cypriot government and President Nikos Christodoulides for their efforts in bridging relations between countries and continents. Addressing the Cyprus issue, she reaffirmed that the European Union views the situation as a European matter and remains committed to a sustainable solution. She specified that the only viable path is the reunification of Cyprus as a bicommunal, bizonal federation, strictly adhering to UN resolutions, EU law, and European values. Furthermore, Metsola noted the necessity of resuming UN-led negotiations to resolve the long-standing dispute. She also discussed broader institutional goals, including strengthening democratic resilience, combating disinformation, and engaging European citizens, particularly the youth.
