Recent drowning incidents reported in Larnaca district

On Thursday, June 18, 2026, two separate tragic incidents occurred in the Larnaca district. In the first incident, two 20-year-old Somali women drowned near the breakwaters in Oroklini. Despite rescue efforts by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, both women were pronounced dead upon arrival at Larnaca General Hospital. Reports indicate that a third woman was also caught in the currents but was successfully rescued. Officials noted the absence of lifeguards at the specific location, although staffing was scheduled for July 1. In a separate incident near Softades beach in the Mazotos area of Kiti, a 69-year-old Greek Cypriot man was found dead in the sea. The body was discovered floating five meters from the shore by a local business owner. Police have ruled out criminal activity and are awaiting autopsy results to determine if the death was caused by drowning or natural causes.
