Increase in beach set rental prices in Cyprus
The Central Beach Committee in Cyprus has set a maximum price of 10 euros for a beach set, consisting of two sunbeds and one umbrella. Ayia Napa Mayor and committee president Christos Zannettou stated that this represents an increase from the 7.50 euro rate that had remained unchanged for approximately 20 years. Zannettou justified the price hike by citing the cost of upgraded services provided by municipalities, which amount to hundreds of thousands of euros. Despite the increase, he argued that Cyprus remains competitive, claiming the price is less than half of what is charged in other tourist destinations. Municipalities have the discretion to implement this maximum fee, and several have already done so this year. Officials clarified that renting a set is not mandatory and members of the public are free to use designated public areas to set up their own equipment. Local authorities and operators are required to respect the rights of individuals who choose not to rent equipment.
