Political parties call for criminal investigation into mafia state report
Following the publication of the Anti-Corruption Authority’s report regarding the so-called 'mafia state,' several political parties in Cyprus have demanded the immediate appointment of independent criminal investigators. The Democratic Rally (DISY) party specifically requested a strict three-month timeline for the investigation to be completed, emphasizing the need to utilize existing evidence effectively. The Democratic Alignment (DEPA) has also called for a thorough and objective investigation to restore public trust, while stressing the importance of the presumption of innocence. Meanwhile, the Democratic Change party has labeled the findings a blow to the rule of law and urged that the investigation proceed without the involvement of the Legal Service to avoid potential bias. The report reportedly suggests potential criminal offenses involving high-ranking officials and entities, including former President Nikos Anastasiades. Officials mentioned in the report have denied the findings, labeling them as inaccurate. Parties reiterate the necessity of transparency and zero tolerance for corruption to preserve institutional credibility.
