Cyprus receives first pre-financing under EU SAFE defense fund

The European Commission announced that Cyprus received a first pre-financing payment of 177.2 million euros on Thursday. This amount represents 15 percent of Cyprus's total allocation of 1.2 billion euros under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) mechanism. SAFE is a 150-billion-euro financial tool designed to provide loans to EU member states for military investments. The funding aims to support joint procurement of ammunition, missiles, air defense, and land combat systems produced within the European Union. These investments are part of the broader ReArm Europe/Readiness 2030 initiative, which seeks to mobilize over 800 billion euros for EU defense. EU Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, stated that the payment supports the reinforcement of European security and military capabilities. The funds are intended to enhance interoperability among EU armed forces and strengthen the bloc's defense industry through cross-border cooperation.
