Israeli Foreign Minister Saar cuts ties with EU foreign policy chief Kallas
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has announced the suspension of all contact with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. The decision follows reports alleging that Kallas compared Israeli policy toward Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank to apartheid in South Africa. These alleged remarks were reportedly made last month during closed-door meetings in Mexico City while Kallas was part of an EU delegation. The report, initially published by Euractiv, cited anonymous officials and diplomats as sources. Saar stated that Kallas has not denied or addressed these claims. In response, Kallas issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) expressing a commitment to a constructive relationship with Israel based on mutual respect. She reiterated the European Union’s support for a two-state solution and its official stance condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Kallas emphasized her willingness to continue dialogue despite the diplomatic rift initiated by the Israeli side.
