Pharmaceutical industry clarifies role in Gesy patient copayments

The Cyprus Association of Research and Development Pharmaceutical Companies (KEFEA) has stated it has no role in determining patient copayments within the General Healthcare System (Gesy). KEFEA emphasizes that copayment policies are set by the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) and the Ministry of Health, governed by legislation established prior to the system's implementation. During the seven years of Gesy, the pharmaceutical industry has covered approximately 25% of costs through discounts and agreements. Following a recent agreement with the HIO, this contribution is expected to reach one-third of total costs. The association warned that further financial pressure could impact drug availability and discourage the introduction of new medications. Furthermore, KEFEA noted systemic distortions, such as the absence of zero-copayment drugs in certain therapeutic categories, and has submitted proposals for revising the contribution calculation method.
