Political conflict between Disy and Akel following the anti-corruption authority report

A sharp political dispute has emerged between the Democratic Rally (Disy) and the Progressive Party of Working People (Akel) regarding the recent report by the Authority Against Corruption. The conflict stems from Akel’s calls for the immediate resignation of the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General, citing findings related to a so-called 'mafia state'. Disy spokesperson Onoufrios Koullas responded by accusing Akel of showing disrespect toward constitutional institutions and the rule of law. Koullas labeled Akel a 'toxic party' and argued that only judicial processes, not political parties, have the authority to appoint or dismiss state officials. Furthermore, Disy criticized Akel’s historical record, referencing past controversies including the Mari naval base explosion, the economic crisis, the Cyta pension fund loss, and the Dromolaxia scandal. Disy maintains that responsibilities should be determined through established procedures rather than political agitation. In contrast, Akel continues to insist that the leadership of the Attorney General’s office must resign to restore institutional integrity.
