Poed union demands retention of teacher appointment lists beyond 2027
On June 18, 2026, the Pan-Cypriot Council of General Representatives (PSGA) of the teachers' union POED met in Nicosia to discuss the future of teacher recruitment. The organization officially confirmed its stance to maintain the existing appointment and tenure process through the 'Dioristeon' lists beyond the year 2027. POED expressed concern regarding delays by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (YPAN) in addressing issues related to these lists and the new appointment system. As a result, POED has suspended its participation in consultations until the ministry submits a comprehensive written proposal. The union warned that any legislative changes deviating from their stated principles would trigger industrial action. The union’s primary goal is to address distortions in the new appointment plan and ensure that currently serving educators are not unfairly penalized. The ministry has faced criticism for failing to fulfill prior commitments regarding the timely presentation of its proposals.
