Nicosia metropolitan municipality presents two-year progress report
On June 18, 2026, the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, presented a two-year progress report regarding the metropolitan municipality reform. The event was attended by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, municipal officials, and local representatives. According to municipal data, the authority has reduced its financial deficit by 80 percent through stricter revenue controls and anti-tax evasion measures. The administration reported that 659 formal decisions have been implemented since the merger of the municipal authorities. Furthermore, the municipality has addressed over 75 percent of citizen requests, utilizing new digital channels, five dedicated citizen service offices, and a unified call center. Director-general Myria Pilakouta attributed these operational improvements to the efforts of the municipal staff. The city successfully managed inherited challenges, including equipment shortages, infrastructure maintenance needs, and financial obligations from the pre-merger period. The focus of the municipality is now shifting from the consolidation phase to the execution of major urban projects.
