Cyprus Attorney General and Deputy announce recusal from corruption report review

The Cyprus Anti-Corruption Authority recently released a report on corruption allegations. In response, Attorney General George Savvides and Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides announced their formal recusal from evaluating the findings or making related decisions. To manage the case, they established a special prosecutorial council tasked with handling the report. However, this council consists of senior officials from the Legal Service who are subordinates of the two recused officials. Critics argue that this arrangement undermines the impartiality of the process. There are concerns that despite the recusal, the influence of the Attorney General and his Deputy will persist through their subordinates. If independent criminal investigators are appointed, they would ultimately report to this internal council.
