Two women drown at Oroklini beach in Larnaca

On Thursday, June 18, a drowning incident occurred at Lebay beach in Oroklini, Larnaca, resulting in the deaths of two women. Reports indicate that five women, identified as Somali nationals residing legally in the Republic of Cyprus, entered the water near the breakwaters. Three of them were swept away by strong currents, with only one being rescued. A search and rescue operation, coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), began at 19:30. The operation involved the port and marine police, a helicopter from the 460th Search and Rescue Squadron, and rescue teams from Larnaca airport and the city. The victims were transported to Larnaca General Hospital, where their deaths were confirmed. Authorities are currently investigating the incident, including potential factors such as weather conditions, currents, and the fact that the lifeguard tower was unmanned at the time.
