Invasive pufferfish spread across Greek waters
The pufferfish, a non-native invasive species, has been identified in Greek waters since 2013 and is currently spreading across Crete, the Dodecanese, and the Saronic Gulf. Authorities report the presence of six distinct species of pufferfish in the region, with at least one species identified as highly toxic. Public warnings have been issued against consuming these fish due to serious health risks. Beyond ecological concerns, reports indicate an increase in pufferfish attacks on swimmers, with sightings recorded as far north as Attica. Local fishermen face significant operational challenges as the species damages equipment and displaces native marine life. Official guidelines emphasize that citizens should avoid contact and consumption, particularly regarding the most common toxic variety. The situation is being monitored as the species continues to expand into southern and eastern coastal areas.
