Nurses report overcrowding and staff shortages at Athalassa Hospital
The Mental Health Nursing Branch of PASYDY has issued a report regarding the critical conditions at Athalassa Hospital. Currently, the hospital is operating at 150% of its intended capacity, with over 90 patients occupying facilities designed for 60. This situation follows a reduction in available wards from five to three due to building unsuitability. Additionally, the facility is facing a documented shortage of 46 mental health nurses. Despite the opening of two new off-site units, officials state that these are insufficient to meet current demand. Nursing staff are increasingly relying on mandatory overtime to maintain basic operations. The union warns that this high workload leads to burnout and poses significant safety risks to both patients and staff. The overcrowding is now affecting common areas within the hospital, further compromising the quality of psychiatric care.
