Diplomatic tension arises between Giorgia Meloni and Donald Trump after controversial claims
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has dismissed claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated in an interview with the Italian channel La7 that she had begged him for a photograph during the G7 summit in France. Meloni publicly labeled these comments as completely fabricated and expressed her astonishment at the U.S. President's behavior towards an established ally. While the Italian government has expressed significant anger over the situation, the original audio of the interview was not released by the channel, which only provided a dubbed version. In response to the remarks, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of his planned visit to the United States scheduled for June 21-22. The relationship between the two leaders had previously faced strain due to disagreements regarding the war in Iran and the use of Sicilian air bases. Despite recent signs that the two leaders were attempting to mend ties, this public exchange marks a notable deterioration in their diplomatic relationship. Meloni further criticized Trump for showing more deference to the enemies of the West than to traditional allies, asserting that neither she nor Italy would beg for favors.
