Cyprus taxi federation warns of financial strain due to regional instability and competition
The Pancyprian Taxi Federation (POAT) has reported significant financial distress over the past four months, citing the ongoing crisis in the Middle East as a primary factor. The federation notes a 30% decline in tourism compared to the same period last year, which has directly impacted taxi revenues. Additionally, POAT claims that 8-10% of potential transit business is being diverted to the occupied territories. Operators are also struggling with increased expenses for fuel, vehicle maintenance, and tires. Furthermore, the federation reports a surge in illegal transport services, arguing that inspectors from the Department of Road Transport are currently diverted to duties related to the EU Presidency. POAT has warned that if these conditions persist, it will request state financial support to ensure the viability of the profession.
