Sharp rise in drug and behavioral addictions reported in Cyprus
Elena Zarouna, director of the Kenthea addiction treatment center, has reported a significant increase in drug abuse among young people in Cyprus, with minors as young as 14 and 15 frequently entering treatment. Wastewater testing data shows a sharp rise in stimulants, including a 260% increase in amphetamines in Limassol and a 93% rise in cocaine in Larnaca. Recent police anti-drug squad (Ykan) operations have uncovered a trend of importing dried poppy bulbs via courier services, with total seizures reaching approximately 58kg following the most recent discovery of 6.5kg in the Famagusta and Paphos districts. More than 13 individuals have been arrested in connection with these operations. Experts also warned of growing behavioral addictions, specifically gambling and online gaming. Additionally, the Addiction Treatment Authority reported that lifetime cannabis usage among those aged 15-64 has tripled from 6.6% in 2006 to 18% in 2023. Officials emphasized the urgent need for prevention programs to address the escalating demand for services.
