Large amounts of shredded plastic found on Paphos beaches

Large quantities of shredded plastic of unknown origin have recently washed up on the beaches of Paphos, causing significant disruption for swimmers and raising environmental concerns. Acting Paphos Mayor Angelos Onisiforou has convened an emergency meeting to address the issue and investigate the source of the pollution. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. Representatives from the Department of Environment, the Cyprus Ports Authority, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, health services, and other municipalities in the Paphos district have been invited to participate. The objective of the session is to coordinate efforts, implement immediate measures, and mitigate both the environmental impact and potential damage to the region's tourism. Similar incidents have also been reported on beaches in other municipalities. Authorities are treating the situation as a priority to ensure the safety and image of the coastal areas.
